Australian leaders travel to Indonesia for cross-cultural leadership experience

30 May 2018

The Australian Rural Leadership Program (ARLP) Course 24 travelled to Indonesia in May 2018 for a 16 day cross-cultural experience to:

  • further develop their leadership capacity
  • build on their self-awareness
  • expand their understanding of leadership
  • form international relationships.

Through immersing in the local custom and culture and looking through a cross cultural lens, participants gained valuable insight into Australia’s closest international neighbour. An emphasis was on relationship building to gain an appreciation of social, environmental, and economic issues in Indonesia to those in Australia.

“Indonesia was an amazing experience and I learnt a lot about the country, the people and leadership. We saw people leading in all sorts of roles and in all sorts of places, some of them unexpected.

One of my favourite leadership quotes neatly encapsulates one of the main messages I took home from Indonesia: If your actions can inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more then you are a leader,” said Tim Ferraro, sponsored by NSW Local Land Services.

“A moment I will treasure will be the joy of singing with children in the slums of Jakarta. It was simply happiness, smiles and delight building human connection,” said Kirrilee Warr, sponsored by the Grains Research and Development Corporation.

ARLP Course 24 will meet again in Canberra in October 2018 to mark the completion of their 15 month leadership development program and to celebrate their transition to becomimg members of the ARLF alumni network. A Graduation Ceremony with the course participants, their families and sponsors will be held on 18 October.
