The Australian Rural leadership Foundation and Scott Morrison Value Closer Ties with Vietnam

23 August 2019

The Australian Rural leadership Foundation (ARLF) will immerse 35 leaders from across rural, regional and remote Australia in Vietnam early next year. These leaders are part of the most in-depth experiential leadership development program in the country – the Australian Rural Leadership Program (ARLP).

Much significance has been made of Scott Morrison’s first stand-alone visit to Vietnam as an Australian Prime Minister in 25 years. Our countries’ bilateral trade approaching $15 billion, the large Vietnamese community in Australia and the rapid rise of Vietnam as a tourist destination, makes Vietnam an exciting destination for future business growth and prosperity.

“In considering the next destination for the program, there were a number of countries considered and all had real merit. In the end, Vietnam became the obvious choice. Our leadership development approach differs from many others in that we create an environment for leaders to discover more about themselves, their biases and behaviours by providing diverse experiences often through the lens of other leaders,” Matt Linnegar, ARLF Chief Executive.

The ARLP has been running for 27 years and for the past decade the ARLF has focused solely on the Indo Pacific region – including a five-year commitment to India. Next year marks the start of a new destination for the ARLP’s international component and Vietnam is the destination of choice. As part of this 50-day program, the ARLF will immerse Australian leaders in the Vietnamese culture for 14 days, engaging with leaders from that country in their own context.

“It is important that there is a real opportunity to engage with leaders in that country, to experience life through their eyes and to develop deep relationships over time. We are not tourists or there to do business, we are there to truly develop deep links between leaders in both countries. In this sense Vietnam has much to offer and potentially to gain and both nations stand to benefit,” said Mr Linnegar.

The ARLF looks forward to establishing long-term relationships in Vietnam from 2020. Over the next five years, more than 150 leaders will visit Vietnam to develop their leadership capacity and explore our countries’ international relationships.

The Australian Rural Leadership Program will run from June 2020 to October 2021.

Applications are OPEN NOW and close on Friday 30 August 2019.
