Torres Strait young leaders take on Canberra

25 February 2019

Eight individuals from the Torres Strait graduated from the Torres Strait Young Leaders’ Program in Canberra on Tuesday 19 February 2019.

The program is a collaboration between the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation and the Torres Strait Regional Authority (TSRA). It is for young and passionate leaders between the ages of 18-30 who are of Torres Strait or Aboriginal decent living in the Torres Strait region.

These eight leaders bravely travelled from the Torres Strait to Canberra to learn about leadership, themselves and interact with other leaders. They engaged in a challenging experiential activity and learnt about leadership, advocacy and influence.

Andrea Hogg, Manager of the program said it was a pleasure to work with this group as they stepped out of their comfort zone to take on a wide range of leadership challenges.

“This was the first time many of the participants had been away from the Torres Strait and they enjoyed the opportunity to experience Canberra and its surrounds, learn about the political process and engage with Indigenous Australian leaders,” said Andrea.

The Foundation’s relationship with the TSRA commenced back in 2007 when Charlie Kaddy, who is the current CEO of the TSRA, was sponsored to undertake the Australian Rural Leadership Program, our flagship leadership Program.

The first Torres Strait Islander Young Leader’s Program commenced in 2010 and was originally called the School Leavers’ Program.

From this initial partnership, our work together has continued to grow. The TSRA sponsor:

  • the Torres Strait Young Leaders’ Program
  • the Torres Strait Islander Womens’ Leadership Program.
  • the Australian Rural Leadership Program
  • TRAIL – emerging leaders’ program.

Over 110 members of the Foundation’s alumni were sponsored by the TSRA, to undertake one of our programs. The Foundation recognises the importance of our ongoing partnership with the TSRA and we value the opportunity to learn through shared experiences with Torres Strait Islanders.
