Twelve emerging rural leaders graduate from TRAIL program

10 May 2017

Twelve emerging leaders from throughout Australia graduated from the Training Rural Australians In Leadership (TRAIL) program in Canberra on Tuesday 2 May.

TRAIL is an eight-day cross-sector leadership program delivered by the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation (ARLF) which takes place in Canberra and surrounding regions.

During the program the graduates expanded their leadership skills through understanding more about themselves and others, through experiencing leadership in context and by developing relationships to form a network of supportive leaders.

Graduates of the program were sponsored by industry and government organisations, or their employers to step away from their busy lives and focus on developing their abilities to collaborate, communicate, influence and lead.

Highlights of the program included:

  • completing a challenging four-day outdoor leadership experience in the mountains outside of Canberra
  • travelling to Young, NSW to engage in a panel discussion with local regional and community leaders
  • visiting Blantyre Farms piggery at Murringo and hearing from operator Edwina Beveridge about her experiences running her local agribusiness operation

Participant Adam Knapp from the Queensland Farmers Federation in Brisbane, said

“the highlight of the program has been the panel and hearing different views from a highly effective community. The panel had the right mix of people divulging their leadership strengths.”

The panel discussion enabled participants to examine regional and community leadership in context. The engaging discussion emphasised that Young is a vibrant and community focused town. The panel consisted of:

  • Brian Ingram – Chair Hilltops Council
  • Sally Hofman – Chief Executive Officer Lambing Flats Enterprises
  • Anthony McMahon – General Manager Hilltops Council
  • Adrian Capra – Art of Espresso
  • Jane Worner – Farmer, local community leader and graduate of the Australian Rural Leadership Program

“Young provided an opportunity for participants to meet with regional and community leaders to hear their leadership stories, challenges and advice” said Andrea Hogg, Program Facilitator of the ARLF.
