It’s always helpful when alumni reach out and let us know about the achievements of others in the network. A big shout out to Justin Crosby, who suggested that we focus on the work of Richard Franklin, ARLF Fellow from Course 19. Richard is a Professor of Public Health and Tropical Medicine based at James Cook University (JCU) and specialises in injury prevention and tropical medicine. His passion for public safety is obvious when you consider his research into drowning prevention, farm/agricultural machinery safety, quad bike injuries and road safety etc over many years.
Notably, Richard convened the World Injury Preventions and Safety Promotion conference in late November 2022 in Adelaide – a international conference held every two years, with over 500 delegates in attendance.
Along with his work with JCU, he is also a Board Member for the Royal Life Saving Society – Australia, and has recently become the National President of KidSafe, an organisation that aims to prevent unintentional injury to children through community awareness and education.
Toolbox Talks…
Richard is also the host of a series of “Toolbox Talks” by Farmsafe Australia, focusing on fostering a farm culture that leads to safer working, living, and playing environments. There are currently six episodes available, ranging from 15 – 20 mins in length, with more to come. Check them out on Spotify Toolbox Talks for Australian Farmers
Richard’s interest in broadening connection and relationships with those in regional and rural Australia, paired with his obvious passion for public safety and how a better understanding of leadership could support his work, initially encouraged him to apply for the Australian Rural Leadership Program in 2013.
We are so proud Richard and his ongoing work and commitment to make regional Australia a safer place for us all.
Keen to support Richard and his passion for public safety? Farmers needed for research…..
Richard and his team are currently on the lookout for any farmers interested in partaking in a research project that explores the risks and work practices associated with using mobile plant machinery and associated tools/implements.
If you are a farmer and would like to be involved, or know others farmers in your community that might be interested, please reach out to Richard via richard.franklin@jcu.edu.au. It’s important that we support these research projects and play our part in helping to make our farms a safer workplace for all.
