Have Australia’s primary industries reached a cross-road?

Our food and fibre sectors are facing one of its toughest tests yet. A recent survey conducted by the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation (ARLF) has uncovered the biggest challenges and most promising opportunities facing our primary industries today. With labour shortages, varrying climatic conditions, and rising costs dominating concerns, the findings raise a crucial question: is the sector prepared to meet these challenges head-on?

You can share your thoughts by completing the ARLF survey here.

A workforce on the brink

Across the country, producers are grappling with an all-too-familiar issue: labour shortages. From seasonal workers to long-term skilled staff, the availability of a reliable workforce remains a constant struggle. Meanwhile, the impacts of changing climatic conditions are creating uncertainty in decision making processes right from the paddock to the global export market. Extreme weather events, longer droughts, and unpredictable conditions are testing the resilience of even the most experienced operators and businesses.

It doesn’t stop there. Rising on-farm input costs, biosecurity threats, and public misconceptions about agriculture add to the growing list of concerns. As one respondent put it: “We’re managing one crisis after another without much breathing room.”

So, where do we find that breathing room? The survey points to some exciting opportunities that could redefine the sector’s future.

Turning challenges into opportunities for our primary industries

Despite the challenges, optimism remains. Many respondents identified promising opportunities that could turn the tide for Australian agriculture. Leading the charge are regenerative and sustainable farming practices, which balance profitability with care for the environment. These practices are being complemented by cutting-edge technology, from precision tools to automation, that promises smarter, more efficient farming.

Other opportunities include:

  • Renewable energy projects: Solar farms and wind projects are transforming rural areas while creating new revenue streams for producers.
  • Carbon farming: Environmental markets are offering new ways for farmers to earn income while contributing to a sustainable future.
  • Export growth: Expanding into new markets and promoting native grains could help future-proof the industry.

The question is: can the sector embrace these opportunities fast enough to stay ahead of the challenges?

Are we ready to adapt?

When asked how well the sector is positioned to respond to these challenges and opportunities, the responses were mixed. Nearly half of the survey participants felt the industry is “somewhat well-positioned.” However, nearly a third felt the sector is not ready, with only one respondent believing the industry is “extremely well-positioned.”

These results highlight a shared sentiment: there’s work to be done. While the potential is undeniable, the sector must strengthen its capacity to innovate and adapt. Leadership will play a pivotal role in mobilising the industry to meet these challenges head-on.

Have your say

The ARLF survey has provided a snapshot of the challenges and opportunities shaping Australia’s primary industries, but the conversation doesn’t have to stop here. What do you see as the greatest hurdles or untapped opportunities for the sector? Is it ready to rise to the occasion—or does it need a new approach?
