As the Business Support Specialist at the Australian Rural Leadership Foundation, I’m all about helping people work smarter, not harder. Over my time here I’ve worn a few hats but the common thread has always been finding ways to make our systems and processes flow more smoothly so the team can focus on what really matters – supporting leadership across rural, regional and remote Australia.
Additionally, I’m focused on the build of the Australian Rural Leaders Hub – a space that’s really close to my heart. It’s about connecting our alumni and changemakers across the country, creating a digital community that reflects the strength, generosity and collaboration that define rural Australia. It’s exciting work, knowing that we’re building something that will continue to spark connection and leadership well into the future.
Where does your passion for rural, regional and remote Australia come from?
I grew up on Wiradjuri Country, a small farm just outside Wagga Wagga, in Big Springs, though I didn’t fully appreciate the rural lifestyle until I left it behind. After some time in the city (and over a year of living in Canada), I found myself missing that sense of space and community you only get in the regions. The quiet nights, the birds in the morning, the absence of that constant hum of city life, it’s all part of what fuels my passion for regional Australia and the people who make it so special.
What’s your favourite memory or most memorable moment in rural, regional and remote Australia?
Nothing quite beats the memory of a two-hour, un-conditioned bus ride home from school to toddle up the driveway lined with just flowering wattle and canola emerging from the paddock next door, it was (and is) my favourite smell in the world.
Now, what do you get up to when you’re not at work?
When I’m not at work, you’ll usually find me travelling, hiking, camping or crafting something, I’m one of those people who always has a project on the go. I grew up with the saying “the devil will find work for idle hands,” and it clearly stuck!
What’s your favourite past time?
My weekends (and most week-nights) are spent with an audiobook or podcast while I craft away. Depending on the weather it will be mosaicing outside, sewing, knitting or anything else I feel like trying – there aren’t enough hours in the day!
What’s your professional background?
My background is in events management, particularly in the arts, and before joining ARLF I worked with the Regional Australia Institute managing their Regions Rising series. Those experiences gave me a front-row seat to the passion and innovation that thrives in regional communities, something that’s only deepened since becoming part of ARLF.
